Guest Speaker – April Yazzie

Submitted by jane.wilkins on Thu, 03/25/2021 - 09:32

Our guest speaker presented information on how drugs of all kinds affect our brains. April Yazzie is an Associate Clinical Mental Health Counselor at Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake (UICSL). Adolescence and young adulthood is a time of significant growth and development in the brain. Teens’ developing brains are more susceptible than the brains of adults to damage from outside influences. This means substance use during the teen years creates a more distinct risk for immediate and lasting harm.

“You don’t have to be someone special to achieve something amazing. You’ve just got to have a dream, believe in it, and work hard.” Jessica Watson, from Australia, is the youngest person to sail solo and unassisted around the world at 16 years of age.

To inspire our Legacy students to have dreams, focus and work hard, we made a trip to the Springville Museum of Art to view the Utah All-State High School Art Show. Each of us has the power within us to achieve amazing things.
