We began our Halloween activities with photos of our students and their children to capture the adorable kiddos in their Halloween costumes. Next, we enjoyed song and story time. We may forget the benefits of nursery rhymes and finger plays. They help children with fine motor skills, and with emerging literacy skills such as phonemic awareness and rhyming. It is never too early to read and sing with a child. Following story time was the much awaited Trick-or-Treating through the hall to each classroom. The children were encouraged to thank each person who gave them a treat. Mrs.
What autumn traditions does your family have; homemade scones, caramel apples, visiting a pumpkin patch, watching your favorite movie or braving a haunted house? Many of our traditions involve food. Students had the opportunity to test Mrs. Boothe’s tradition of making a meal in a pumpkin. We hollowed out the pumpkins, prepared the fillings, and baked them for our lunch. There were three yummy options to taste. Rounding out the meal were some breadsticks, fruit and pumpkin doughnuts. It was a scrumptious day to be a Crusader!
This spooky project gave us the opportunity to express creativity, visit with friends and make a fun Halloween decoration. It started with a 2-liter bottle, a balloon and some wire to construct the form for the ghost’s body. The next step was to starch the gauzy fabric and drape it over the form. After the starch dried, it was time to add features and details to give each apparition some personality. Arts and crafts help students develop lifelong characteristics of decision-making, persistence, focus, accountability and confidence.
