Superintendent Nielsen presented the 2019-2020 theme for the school district, “Discover the Power Within.” He shared some thoughts from the book, The Resilience Breakthrough, by Christian Moore. The author is “convinced that each of us has a power hidden within, something that can get us through any kind of adversity. That power is resilience.” Here are four types: Relational, Street, Resource, and Rock Bottom Resilience
Relational Resilience
- Surrender the one-up relationship
- Engage emotionally
- Friendship – don’t take it for granted
- Turn outward
- Put down that device!
- Drop the façade
Street Resilience
- Get the whole picture
- Channel pain into a cause
- Reframe your limitations as potential strengths
- Focus on what you’re doing right
- Look fear in the eye
Resource Resilience
- Cultivate a worthy mindset
- Tap into the power of people
- Action, action, action!
- Fight resignation with spontaneity
- Wrestle complacency to the ground
- Get some production therapy
- Don’t accept no
Rock Bottom Resilience
- Radically accept your circumstances
- Don’t make things worse
- Go for a small win
- Fix a broken window
- Tear off labels
- Discover the power of a future promise
- Be illogical
- Forgive – it’s the only options
